VOIP

Voice-over-Internet Protocol - VoIP is a common term referring to a certain type of transmission technologies which purpose is the delivery of voice communications over IP networks such as the Internet or other packet-switched networks. The term is mostly associated with the actual transmission of voice rather than the protocol executing it and is also known as IP telephony, Internet telephony, voice over broadband (VoBB), broadband telephony, and broadband phone.
VoIP systems transfer telephony signals, converted from analog voice signals to compressed digital audio and the process is reversed at the receiving end, allowing the amount of data transferred over the Internet to be reduced.

VoiP owes its popularity mainly on its cost advantages compared to the traditional telephone networks.
